How to Determine Weight for Overseas Air and Sea Shipments
International movers have ample experience in shipping HHGs (household goods) overseas or anywhere in the world. This extensive experience enables us to intuitively recognize associations between the weight and volume of a shipment.
Sea Shipments
For common household goods, the average weight is calculated based on a weight density of 6.5 lbs per cubic foot or 105 kilograms per cubic meter. When dealing with a normal mixture of household goods (furniture and boxes), we can also use the number of articles on the inventory list to help estimate the weight. This is due to the fact that some clients may have many heavy items like books. In this scenario, the results may be a little different.
The general average weight can be calculated based on 40 lbs / 18.18 kg per article on the inventory list. If it is different than the 6.5 lbs/cubic foot, this will mean that there is not a normal mixture of HHG in the shipment.
Example: A shipment containing 100 items can get estimated at 4000 lbs or 615 cubic foot / 17.38 cubic meters.
Air Shipments
Air shipments are calculated at a dimensional weight of 167 kg per cubic meter. If the weight ends up being higher than this value, the charges will ultimately get determined based on the higher value between the dimensional weight and the actual weight.
