The Application Process
In order to make Aliyah, you have to apply for Israeli citizenship. Applicants from Canada can fill out their forms with the assistance of Nefesh B’Nefesh, an organization dedicated to helping North American Jews make Aliyah.
Nefesh B’Nefesh recommends applying for Aliyah six to eight months in advance of your move. As part of the application process, you will have an interview with a shaliach (a representative of the Jewish Agency for Israel, a quasi-governmental agency in Israel). The shaliach will review your documents at this time.
Shipping Your Belongings
Many people ship their belongings to Israel. One of the benefits of making Aliyah is that you’re exempt from paying duties.
When you’re packing, bear in mind that Israeli appliances run on 220 volts of electricity. Their plugs are designed differently than those in North America. Also, even though it can get cold in certain parts of Israel, you won’t need the same down-filled parkas you’d wear during Canadian winters.
Moreover, Israeli homes are smaller than North American houses. You’ll have less room, so be careful when you’re selecting what you’re going to pack.
Once You Arrive
Your Aliyah process continues when you get off the plane. You’ll deal with Misrad HaKlita (the Immigration and Absorption Ministry) as well as Misrad HaPnim (the Ministry of the Interior). They will give you a number of important documents, such as an identification number, registration for a health fund (known in Hebrew as Kupat Cholim), and a voucher for ulpan (intensive Hebrew classes).
After you get settled in and received your shipping container, you’ll find that your days are filled with going to government offices. This is part of the experience of making Aliyah – it ensures that you receive the services to which you’re entitled as an Israeli immigrant. At the same time, you’ll be going to ulpan classes so that you can learn to communicate effectively in Hebrew. These classes are vital to help you integrate into the Israeli workforce and culture.
