The informational book series “For Dummies” aims to explain complicated subjects (especially those related to computers and the internet) in an easy-to-understand way for the average reader. At Orbit International Moving Logistics Ltd, we wanted to apply this concept to simplify your preparations for an international move: we prepared an “International Moving for Dummies” guide. Read on for some simple tips on moving to another country.
Stay organized. If you’re not an organized person, now is the time to start being one! You’ll need to make lists and set schedules. If you aren’t organized, you’ll find that you’ll be more stressed when it comes time to get things done.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Specifically, you should ask your friends, family and colleagues for recommendations of international movers and relocation specialists. If they’ve never had to look for an international moving company, they might know someone who has. They can also give you advice on what to look for in this type of service, and what to avoid when shipping worldwide.
Do your research. Call three to five moving companies for quotes. Bear in mind that the cheapest quote is not the best quote. You should choose the quote that includes the most services for the lowest price. If the moving company doesn’t give you a lot of information about what’s included in the quote, just ask. If the company’s representative doesn’t want to give you more details, then you know that’s not the moving company for you.
Sort your stuff before you start packing. Over the years, we all accumulate things we don’t need. That doesn’t mean you need to bring it all with you when you move, especially if you’re moving to another country. Get rid of anything you’ve realized you haven’t used in more than a few months.
Decide what you are taking with you, and keep it organized – there’s that “O” word again. Once you’ve figured out what you’re taking with you, you’ll need to put those things into two categories: what’s coming with you on the plane and what can be packed. For example, you’ll want to bring your passport and other travel documents with you on the plane.
Be prepared on moving day. Once more, this tip goes back to being organized. When the movers show up is not the time to start sorting out your stuff. Being ready also means making sure the movers have a place to park their truck outside your home, clearing a path for them outside and inside of the house, shoveling snow if necessary, and putting your pets in a place where they will be out of the way of the movers. Another part of being prepared is keeping the utilities on until the last possible minute – you don’t want to be in the dark or the cold.
